It’s a strange but real occurrence—you turn on the air conditioner to escape the hot summer heat, but instead of being cool and comfortable, you end up with a splitting headache. While only a minority of people suffer from air conditioner headaches, they could be a signal that there is something wrong with your cooling system.
Dirty Air Filters
Since air conditioners dehumidify, there’s a chance that mould can start to grow in the unit if not properly maintained and cleaned. When air filters are neglected, they’re often the first place mould will develop. Once mould appears, it can be easily dispersed throughout the home with the airflow.
Make sure that air conditioner filters are examined and replaced regularly. They should be inspected monthly and replaced as needed—usually every 30 to 60 days. Additionally, schedule AC main.
If your cooling system is loud and makes continuous noises, it could be the cause your air conditioner headaches. Sometimes, we don’t realize how loud the “white noise” around is until it’s gone.
Turn off the air conditioner to see if your headache disappears. If your pain is connected to the noise from your cooling system, it might be time to invest in a new system.
In order to keep your home comfortable, air conditioners remove moisture from the air to reduce humidity in addition to cooling the space. Some people are extremely sensitive to any kind of drop in humidity and can experience headaches from the lack of moisture in the air. Most often, these dehydration headaches will occur while the air conditioner is running at night when you’re asleep.
To remedy this problem, keep your body well hydrated. Ensure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day and especially before bed. Also, try to avoid abrupt temperature/humidity changes. Instead of keeping the AC on all day, turn the unit on when you get home and allow your body to slowly adjust to the change in temperature/humidity.
Air conditioner headaches do affect some homeowners. If you find you suffer from headaches when the AC is on, it’s wise to invest some time and money to find the underlying cause.
