The very last thing any homeowner wishes to see is raw sewage flooding their basement. Unfortunately, as spring approaches with a forecast of months of heavy rainfall, this is a situation that some homeowners will be facing. Fortunately, a backwater preventer can effectively stop basement flooding this season and save you the mess and costly repairs.
A backwater preventer valve is designed to stop sewage from backing up into a building and causing basement flooding. Essentially, it automatically senses when water or sewage is flowing in the wrong direction and completely cuts off the plumbing line when this occurs.
Not only does a flooded basement cause a huge mess and significant destruction, it is also a serious health hazard. A sewage flood will require you and your family to stay at another location temporarily while the basement is properly cleaned and inspected.
You may recall the flooding in the City of Windsor back in October 2016. The city experienced record flooding and left countless homeowners with damaged property and struggling to find a place to stay while their homes were cleared. Insurance wouldn’t cover much of the costs of damage as many homeowners did not have a backwater preventer installed, which is required by law.
As a citizen of Windsor, you can take advantage of the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program. It is designed to allow you the financial subsidy to take appropriate action to reduce the risk of basement flooding by installing a backwater valve and/or a sump pump.
