As the seasons begin to turn from winter to spring, it’s important to prepare your home for the possibility of a flood. Whether it’s a result of melting ice and snow, an increase in the amount of rainfall, or simply the untimely bursting of a pipe, protecting your home and HVAC systems is vital. Here are our tips to prepare for flooding as winter comes to an end in the Windsor-Essex & Chatham-Kent regions.
First, ensure your home’s basement is waterproofed. This can be done by seeking out and filling cracks in the foundation, as well as putting a protective sealant around windows and doors on or below ground level. Installing flood shields on these water access points is also an effective way to prepare for flooding.
You’ll also want to ensure your basement flood drains aren’t covered or blocked and make sure your sump pump is in good working order.
Next, you’ll want to clean your roof and eavestroughs of snow and other debris. Having clear eavestroughs will allow water to flow without obstruction to your home’s downspouts, which should be pointed away from the house and preferably downhill. When it comes to rooftop snow, too much weight can create cracks, and as the snow melts these cracks can quickly turn to roof leaks. Clearing snow off of your roof is a good way to avoid this issue. However, that this can be dangerous, so if you’re uncomfortable clearing snow off your roof, please call a professional.
Finally, installing a backwater preventer can help limit the damage of floodwater in your home. This check valve works by only allowing flow in one direction. When the valve senses a backup, a flap closes to block the backflow from entering your home.
