What to Know Before Buying a Home Generator
- Fahrhall, Generator, Heating Service, home generator, inverter generator, portable generator, Safety, standby generator
No matter where you live in Canada, having a generator is handy. In more remote parts of Canada, a generator is especially useful. Either way, considering the unpredictability of winter in Canada, and the weather in general, a generator is a solid investment. If you’re interested in getting one for your home, here’s what you need to know before buying a home generator.
Types of Generators
The first thing you must know is that there are different types of generators. Purchasing a generator starts by deciding which type you want. There are three main types: portable, inverter, and standby.
Portable Generators
A portable generator, as the name indicates, is portable and can be moved around easily. They often have wheels which makes it even easier to move them around to wherever electricity is needed. Some portable generators are handheld. Portable generators typically run on gasoline and are usually more affordable than standby generators.
Inverter Generators
Inverter generators are smaller than portable generators and even easier to transport. They’re also quieter than portable generators which makes them better for certain activities, like camping.
Inverter generators, however, tend to be more expensive than portable generators, and they produce less power. But, they’re more portable, quieter, and produce fewer emissions. Otherwise, portable and inverter generators are quite similar in the type and amount of electricity they generate.
Standby Generators
Standby generators, on the other hand, provide a more permanent solution, as they’re not so portable. They’re much larger and more expensive than the generators mentioned above. Standby generators can be installed at a home or business and they automatically turn on in the event of a power outage. They’re fueled by propane or natural gas.
Standby generators do cost more money but they’re a safer option than portable generators.
Things to Think About When Buying a Home Generator
Before you purchase the type of generator you want, there are some important considerations. We’ve put together a list of some of the most important things to think about prior to investing in a home generator.
Power Requirements
First, determine how much power you need. What are you going to use your generator for? Portable generators are great for powering a few small things, while standby generators can power your whole home. Calculate the wattage required to operate the appliances you want the generator to power.
Purpose
Next, think about what you’ll be using it for specifically, and how. The generator you need to power your home versus the one you need for camping are very different. For the latter, you might select an inverter generator, for example. But for bigger jobs, like powering your furnace or heat pump when the power goes out, you’ll want a portable or standby generator.
Fuel Source
Then, consider the source of fuel. There are generally 3 ways to fuel a generator: gas, propane, and natural gas. Gas fuels most portable generators. Propane can fuel both standby and portable generators, and natural gas can fuel standby generators. The source of fuel you use, therefore, depends on the generator you buy.
Budget
Finally, set a budget. The generator you purchase will ultimately depend on your budget. Standby generators are more expensive, while portable generators are generally cheaper.
Safety Considerations
There are also safety considerations involved in owning and operating a home generator. Take a look at these safety tips you should know before buying a home generator:
- Never run generators in enclosed areas
- Generators produce exhaust that can cause carbon monoxide poisoning
- Use a portable CO detector to prevent CO poisoning
- Install CO detectors in your home near your garage or wherever the generator is
- Ensure your model meets all safety requirements
- Follow all other safety precautions and manual instructions
Stay Warm During Power Outages
A generator is a worthy investment as it can keep you warm in the event of a power outage from a snowstorm or other extreme weather events. But before you invest in one, do your research. If you want to learn more about home generators, give us a call or stop by our office.
