Air conditioner leaks can be alarming to see, especially if you don’t quite understand what’s causing them. They can actually be a result of some pretty common issues within your unit, and a professional can fix them right up for you! Today we’ll outline some of the reasons for a leaking water through an air conditioner so you can have a good idea of what’s going on within your unit!
**Make sure to turn off your unit if you see water pooled around it! You need to avoid any serious damage and maintain your safety, so turn it off until a technician can check it out.
So why is there water in your air conditioner?
There’s a part inside called the cold evaporator coil. Its job is to cool the warm air flowing over it for your home. This results in condensation around the coil that drips down a special drain pan. This leads to a condensate drain line which drains the water out and away from your air conditioner and home.
Whenever one of these parts experiences a problem, you may see an air conditioner leak. These problems could likely be the following:
- The Drain Line May Be Clogged:
If the drain line is clogged with dirt or anything else, it won’t drain out the water from the drain pan. This will result in the drain pan overflowing and the pooling of water around your air conditioner that you see.
- Your Air Conditioner’s Condensate Pump Could Be Broken:
If your air conditioner is located in your home’s basement, it has a condensate pump. This pump is there to pump away the condensate resulting in your unit through the drain line and out of your home. If it breaks, there’s nothing to help push out the water and it will result in air conditioner leaks.
- Your Unit May Have Low Refrigerant:
Low refrigerant results from a leak in the refrigerant line. This is risky for your air conditioner as it can cause quite a bit of damage. It can freeze the evaporator coil and easily overflow the drain pan when it begins to melt. If you suspect low refrigerant, make sure to contact a professional as soon as you can to avoid any further damage.
- The Air Filter Could Be Dirty:
If the unit’s air filter is clogged up, the cool air for your home cannot pass through easily. This cold air will flow back on the evaporator coil and cause it to freeze and eventually overflow the drain pan when it melts.
