Those of us who are pet owners know that they bring great joy to our lives. Many of us value our pets as part of the family and we treat them with all the love we can give. Pets are amazing ways to enhance your life, but if we’re being honest, there are some less-than-glamorous parts of having a furry friend. Sometimes, having a pet can affect your home’s air quality as they can bring lots of fur, dander, and dirt into the home. Here are some of our favourite tips for pet owners to maintain high air quality in their house!
Clean Your Air Filters Regularly
Cleaning your furnace filter is one of those air quality tips that apply to everyone, not just pet owners, but when it comes to pet owners, it may be necessary to change your air filters even more frequently than the average person. Even if you can’t see it all the time, dogs and cats send lots of hair and dander into the air around you, which eventually is filtered right through your air filter, compromising your home’s air quality. While it’s recommended to replace your furnace filter once every 90 days, we recommend that you check the filter every thirty days to see if you may need to replace it more frequently.
Groom Your Pets Regularly
A well-groomed dog is a dog who sheds less. If you take your dog to the groomers as recommended for their breed, or you take your dog outside to brush them frequently, you will significantly decrease the amount of shedded fur in the air and in your vents. Out of all of our air quality tips for pet owners, this one will help make both you and your furry friend happy all year round.
Keep Your Pets Away From The Outdoor Unit
Most people keep their outdoor HVAC unit in their backyard, which can be a problem because most pets use their owner’s backyard as a bathroom! Dogs urinating on, digging around, or playing with the outdoor HVAC unit can cause damage and cost you money in repairs. We suggest that you block off the area with your HVAC unit from your dog by using a small fence or even just positioning a flower pot in front of the path to your system (depending on the size of your pooch, of course!).
