Allergies vs. HVAC: How to Reduce Your Symptoms
- air quality, Fahrhall, Home Comfort, HVAC Tips, indoor air quality, Spring, Summer, Windsor
Many Canadians experience severe allergies in the spring because of all the new growth that emerges, which is why it’s no surprise that May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. With that in mind, we put together a list of HVAC tips to help you reduce your allergies throughout the spring and summer.
Fresh Filters
You can’t expect the air in your home to be clean if the filters responsible for removing dust and debris are clogged and dirty. The best way to ensure your HVAC system isn’t contributing to your allergies is to stay on top of your air filter maintenance. You should be changing your filter every 90 days at the very least, and more frequently if you have pets or several people living in your home.
Clean Registers and Returns
The covers on your registers and returns are like a sponge for dust and allergens, and because that’s where the air from your HVAC system enters your home it can have a negative impact on your allergies. Take some time to vacuum and wipe down each of the covers on your registers and air returns to remove any dust and allergens.
Housekeeping
One of the best ways to reduce your allergy symptoms is to reduce the amount of dirt and debris that reaches your HVAC system. It’s a good idea to do a deep clean at the start of spring to ensure all of the dust, dander, and allergens that collected in the nooks and crannies of your home over the winter don’t contaminate your air in the spring as well.
Air Purifier
If you’re really serious about reducing your allergy symptoms, consider installing a whole-home air purifier in line with your current HVAC system. Unlike portable air purifiers, which can only clean the air in the rooms they are placed in, whole-home air purifiers work proactively to clean the air before it gets dispersed throughout your home.
