Can I Replace the AC Myself?
- AC Replacement, air conditioner, Air Conditioner Tips, Fahrhall, Home Comfort, Windsor
There are a lot of DIY projects that homeowners can safely undertake, but air conditioner replacement is definitely not one of them. Not only do you need specialized tools and extensive training to remove and replace the AC, installing a cooling system yourself could void any manufacturer warranty.
There’s more to an AC install then disconnecting some wires and pipes and reconnecting them to a new unit. Air conditioners are extremely complex machines that require precise installation to work safely and reliably. Even if you bought the best air conditioning system available, it won’t work as expected if it’s not also expertly installed. One mistake and you could actually damage the system beyond repair.
Another issue that homeowners will run into when trying to replace the AC themselves is that they will likely not have the required certification to work with refrigerants. In Canada, it’s required that anyone handling refrigerants hold a certificate from the province in which the work is being done. This certificate indicates that the individual has successfully completed an environmental awareness course in recycling, recovery and handling procedures for halocarbon refrigerants as outlined in the Refrigerant Code of Practice.
Last, but certainly not least, most AC manufacturers will not honour any warranties if the air conditioner was not professionally installed. There are so many issues that could arise from an improper installation that manufacturers don’t want to assume responsibility for any damage from a DIY project. That’s why part of the warranty paperwork requires the name and contact information of the installation company.
While it might seem expensive to install a new air conditioner, having a professional come in to do it will actually save you money in the long run with warranty projection and peace of mind from a reliable, efficient and safe unit.
