Causes and Signs of HVAC Mould
- air conditioner, furnace, HVAC mould, HVAC System, indoor air quality
Mould can be extremely dangerous to your health. According to Health Canada1, exposure to indoor mould is associated with an increase in chronic wheezing, and associations have been found between a home’s dampness and the risk of developing asthma. To ensure the health of everyone in your home, make sure you know the causes and signs of HVAC mould growth.
HVAC Mould Causes
Mould needs two things to grow—moisture and nourishment. The heating and cooling system can be a perfect spot for mould growth, especially in the warmer months when there is a lot of humidity (and AC condensation) in the air. In addition, outside air is drawn into the HVAC system, bringing along dust, pollen and other particles that provide food for mould growth.
HVAC Mould Signs
There are a few warning signs that could indicate mould in your heating and cooling system:
- The onset of asthma type symptoms in people living in the home, including coughing; sneezing, irritation of eyes, nose or throat, headaches, nausea or dizziness.
- Mildew or mould odour throughout the house.
- Visible mould growth in or around air ducts, registers or vents.
Prevent Mould from Finding a Home in Your Heating and Cooling System
Regular air conditioner and furnace maintenance can help prevent mould from establishing itself in your HVAC system. Ensure that you are inspecting air filters monthly and replacing as needed to prevent particles from entering your system. Monitor drip pans and empty them out immediately as standing water can help promote mould growth. Any water leaks or water spills near the HVAC system should be dried to discourage mould from forming.
Removing mould from your heating and cooling system usually requires a professional and is an extremely time-consuming task. Ensure that you’re keeping your HVAC system clean and mould-free to prevent expensive repairs later on.
