Autumn is here and the temperature is beginning to drop. Regardless of if you’re excited about the cold weather ahead, preparing your home for winter is an absolute must during the fall. As homeowners turn on their furnaces, our experts begin getting more questions from curious homeowners about their HVAC systems. To help our homeowners in Windsor, we’ve compiled a list of answers for our fall HVAC FAQ (or, frequently asked questions)!
How Often Should I Change my Furnace Filter?
This is one of the most common questions we get every autumn, hence why it’s made its way onto the fall HVAC FAQ list! Your furnace filter should be changed once every 30-90 days depending on your system, the quality of the filter, and how many people and pets live in your home. It’s always a good idea to check your furnace filter once every 30 days to assess whether or not it’s time to change it.
Should I Invest in a New Furnace This Fall?
Fall is a great time to invest in a new furnace if your home is in need of one. The earlier in the season the better, as when the really cold weather and the snow has started in the winter HVAC companies in your area will be busy with emergency repairs and replacements.
Why is my Furnace Producing a Burning Smell?
One of our more pressing questions on our fall HVAC FAQ list is whether or not homeowners should panic if they smell something burning coming from their furnace. Most instances where someone may smell burning when they first turn on their furnace is just a result of settled dust igniting and turning to ash once the furnace is turned on for the season and it’s no cause for concern.
However, if the burning smell continues for more than a day or so, you may want to consider calling for HVAC repair as this could be indicative of a bigger issue.
How do I Know if it’s Time for a New Furnace?
If you have an older furnace and you’re wondering whether or not you should buy a new one this autumn, don’t wait until your system breaks down. Instead, look out for these telltale signs that your furnace is on its last legs and replace it accordingly:
- Your furnace is older than 15 years
- You’ve noticed an increase in energy consumption
- You’ve noticed an increase in disrepair
- You’ve noticed uneven heating throughout your home
- Your furnace is producing strange and unusual sounds and smells
How Often Should I Get Professional Maintenance?
Professional maintenance is an absolute necessity when it comes to furnace ownership. This question is on our fall HVAC FAQ list not just because it’s asked frequently, but because it’s very important to understand. Your HVAC system should be maintenanced by a professional HVAC technician once every year. Fall is a great time to call for maintenance because you’ll be able to have peace of mind knowing that your system is working properly for the winter ahead.
