Scott Stevens is the General Manager at Fahrhall Home Comfort Specialists and has helped countless homeowners increase their home comfort. Today, he shares some insider tips about furnace repair, service and installation.
Q: How long does a typical furnace last?
A: The average furnace lifespan is approximately 15 years. While some furnaces can last over 40 years (extremely rare), the average lifespan of a typical gas furnace is around 15-30 years. As long as you have scheduled yearly furnace maintenance, your furnace should easily last over 15 years.
Q: When shopping for a new furnace, which brand or manufacturer do you recommend?
A: I obviously recommend either Lennox or Daikin as they are both our signature brands at Fahrhall and are both industry leaders in both innovation and quality. In addition, both brands have longstanding reputations of excellent workmanship and are backed by a 10-year and 12-year parts limited warranty respectively. In either brand, we have a full selection of options, from multi-stage to full modulation, for any family’s home comfort needs.
Q: What steps can I take at home to help maintain my furnace?
A: The best way to maintain your furnace and to make sure that there are never any parts warranty issues is to have regular yearly preventative maintenance. We always tell our customers to think of your furnace like a car. In order to run smoothly and efficiently, you need to change your oil and have regular tune it ups. Well, the same goes for your furnace. Treat it well and maintain it and it was last for years to come.
Q: Is there anything I can try before calling for furnace repair?
A: The biggest thing to check with today’s furnaces is the filter. Furnaces are extremely high-tech and sensitive with lockouts in place to protect it from getting permanently damaged. If you have forgotten to change your filter, and it is clogged, the furnace may go off on high pressure. This can easily be remedied by changing your filter and resetting your system.
