How Extremely Cold Weather Affects the Furnace
- Fahrhall, furnace, Furnace Maintenance, Home Comfort, Tips, Windsor, winter
Did you know furnaces are sized in accordance with the home’s square footage and
average winter temperature for the area?
For most of the winter, that means your furnace should have no trouble keeping up with the weather. However, if we experience record-setting cold temperatures, your furnace might have trouble keeping up. During times of extremely cold weather, there are a few steps you can take to help keep your furnace operating efficiently and the home warm and comfortable.
Check and Change the Furnace Filter
Help your furnace by ensuring that the filter is clean and not restricting airflow through the system. While some filters are rated to last up to six months, we also advise homeowners to check filters monthly and replace them as needed.
Leave the Thermostat at a Steady Temperature
When the mercury suddenly drops outside, don’t automatically turn up the heat inside. Keeping the thermostat at a steady temperature will help ensure that the heating system isn’t taxed and your home will stay comfortable.
Check Maintenance History
Before extremely cold weather hits, take a look at the maintenance history of the furnace. Annual inspections and cleanings can help keep the system running at peak efficiency and spot any issues that could cause a problem when the temperature drops. If you haven’t had yearly professional service, make sure to book an appointment as soon as possible.
Help your furnace this winter by following a few tips; however, if your furnace completely breaks down during extremely cold weather, don’t forget we offer 24/7 emergency no-heat service.
