How to Set Up Your Humidifier for the Spring and Summer

Over the winter, many Canadian homeowners rely on flow-through or whole-home humidifiers to combat the dry indoor air that results from the use of their heating systems. During the summer, your HVAC system doesn’t need as much help regulating the humidity, so it’s important to know how to set up your humidifier for warmer seasons as well.
There’s always so much to do around the house in preparation for summer, but luckily you can knock this off your to-do list in minutes. There are really only two steps you need to remember in order to learn how to set up your flow-through humidifier for the spring and summer. First, you’ll want to switch the humidifier damper to the summer position, using the switch on your unit. Your damper will look like one of two things:
- A small knob on the side of your flow-through humidifier with a summer and winter setting
- A piece of sheet metal that covers the duct opening.
The next step is to turn off your humidistat, and then you’re done! If you have any trouble locating your damper and humidistat switches, consult your owner’s manual or contact your local HVAC provider for assistance.
Switching your flow-through humidifier to the summer setting is essentially turning it off for the season. The reason it’s so important for you to understand how to set up your humidifier for the spring and summer is that if there is too much humidity in your household air, it can actually reduce the efficiency of your cooling system and force it to work harder.
Air conditioners essentially double as dehumidifiers because they work to remove the hot, humid air from inside your home and replace it with cool air. So, you can see how leaving your flow-through humidifier running will not only negatively impact your indoor air quality during the summer months, but it will also increase your monthly bills and put unnecessary wear and tear on your air conditioner.
