There are lots of little ways to save on energy consumption. Today, with modern HVAC technology, optimizing your home’s energy usage is easier and more accessible than ever. In one small but powerful device – your thermostat – you have the opportunity to save money and cut energy use. Here’s how you can set up your thermostat to maximize savings and improve energy efficiency.
First, you need to optimize the temperature for maximum savings. Ideally, you should keep the temperature between 68 F and 72 F (20-22 C). This is a comfortable range for most people in the winter and it offers the best savings. To boost savings even more, program the temperature lower at night and while you’re away from home. You stand to save up to 1% for every degree you lower the thermostat, but it must be set back for a minimum of 8 hours.
Conversely, in the summer, follow the same principle but in the opposite direction. Generally, a 78 F (25 C) is a good balance between comfort and savings. You can adjust this a few degrees and not increase the costs too much. Just keep in mind, the smaller the difference between the outdoor and indoor temperature, the greater the potential for cost savings.
When it comes to the settings, you should keep your thermostat in “Auto” mode. When the system is in auto mode, the fan will only blow air when the heating or cooling function is running. It automatically shuts off when the desired temperature is reached. If you switch the fan to “On,” it will run continuously and this is not efficient. It’ll use more electricity and cause greater wear and tear.
While you can achieve the same savings with a manual thermostat, a programmable one makes it much easier. A smart thermostat makes it even easier and increases savings by providing you with energy consumption reports and tips for lowering your usage.
When you program your thermostat, think about your family’s weekly schedule. You can program a programmable thermostat to vary by day or keep it the same every day, or program it according to your changing schedule.
Here are some typical schedules:
|Different settings for each day
|Same setting for Monday-Friday, different settings for Saturday, different setting for Sunday
|Same setting for Monday-Friday, different settings for the weekend
|The same schedule all week
