How to Troubleshoot AC Issues
- AC Maintenance, AC Replacement, Air Conditioner Tips, Fahrhall, HVAC Tips, Windsor
When you turn on the air conditioner for the first time, you might run into some problems. Sometimes, common AC issues can be resolved by homeowners and don’t require a call to the cooling company.
If you’ve just turned on your air conditioner for the first time and something isn’t working correctly, try these fixes before calling for service.
Check Thermostat Settings
You would be amazed to learn how many AC issues are resolved by checking thermostat settings and batteries. Make sure your thermostat is programmed to COOL and the temperature is set to below the ambient indoor temperature. It’s also a good idea to check and replace the batteries if needed. Most thermostats will not work with a low battery warning.
Remove Debris around the Condenser
If you use an AC cover, always take it off before turning on the system. Also, remove any overgrowth, leaves or other debris that has collected around the unit. Build up around the condenser can restrict airflow and cause operational problems with the cooling system.
Check Power Supply
If you can’t get the air conditioner to turn on, make sure there is power to the system. The first place to look is the electrical panel. Ensure the breaker was not turned off for the winter or was tripped. If you have an AC shut-off box on the outside of your house, also check there for the proper settings.
If the above fixes don’t correct your problem, you’ll likely need to call for professional service or repair. The best way to prevent AC issues is to schedule annual maintenance. Fahrhall Home Comfort Specialists are currently scheduling appointments for late spring and early summer—once the current restrictions have been lifted.
