Is My AC Cooling Setting Too Low?

Some people do really enjoy a brisk and cool home; as it can be comfortable to step into a chilly house after being outside in the summer heat. Personal preferences aside, keeping your home too cool during the summer months can be financially taxing, and can actually affect the quality of your air conditioning system altogether. If you like to have an extra cool home in the summer, you may want to consider the potential long-term effects on your system, and you might want to periodically ask yourself if your AC cooling setting is too low.
The Cons Of Running Your AC Too Low
The lower the temperature you set for your AC, the harder your unit has to work. If you’re setting your AC’s temperature too low, then your air conditioner will always be working overtime to keep your house extra cold, causing faster wear and tear, and eating up electricity and money at a very quick rate. An overworked air conditioner will require maintenance more often, will have a shorter life span, and will cost you far more financially than an air conditioner working at a regular pace.
The Ideal Temperature For Your Home
In order to save energy and money, The EPA suggests that you keep your house warmer when you’re not at home and there to benefit from the air conditioning. It is recommended that you ideally keep your home at 78 degrees when you’re home during the day, 76 degrees when you’re sleeping, and 82 degrees when you’re away. If you really enjoy the cold this may seem too warm, however, the body acclimates quickly to new temperatures, and it’s better for your overall health and utility bills to keep the temperature around those numbers.
Consistency Is Key!
Another way to prolong the life of your air conditioning unit is to try to keep your thermostat set at a specific and consistent temperature, and not change it too much throughout the day. Keeping a consistent temperature, and only adjusting it when going to sleep or going out will keep your system healthy and extend its lifespan. If you find that your AC is cooling at an extremely low temperature, consider leaving it comfortably at 78 degrees throughout your day just to try it out.
