CBC has recently reported that 2 models of Kidde smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarms have been recalled:
- KN-COSM- IBCA (with battery backup)
- KN-COSM- ICA (without battery backup)
Over 1.5 million units are affected by the recall, having been manufactured between June 2004 and March 2011. The recall has been made due to functionality issues – the detectors are not chirping after the batteries have been replaced.
If you have one of the defective units, stop using it immediately and contact Kidde Canada through their website or phone (1-888-784-2323) Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm EST.
The recall of these devices is a reminder that we must always stay on top of the functionality of our smart technologies and to continue to find ways to benefit the efficiency and comfort of our homes.
Smoke detectors and fire alarms are important components in keeping your home safe. With the advances in technology, there are now detectors and alarms that can integrate seamlessly into your home for total automation and transform your house into a “smart” home.
Simply, a smart home is a residence that has anything electrical (appliances, lighting, heating, security systems, etc.) that is capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled remotely through Wi-Fi. For example, smart smoke detectors have the ability to sound an alarm in-house at the first sign of an emergency, but depending on the model, the detector can also unlock doors, turn on lights to allow for a safe evacuation and alert the nearest fire department about the emergency.
A fully integrated smart house can have a variety of products that increase home efficiency, comfort and protection. Some of the most popular smart technologies are:
Smart thermostats can be controlled remotely to adjust temperatures and some models are able to learn habits over time, automatically adjusting temperatures based on movements in the home.
- Doors that can unlock and lights that can be turned on when your smartphone gets close to your home– ensuring that you will never be stuck trying to unlock a door with arms full of groceries again.
- Motion sensors outside that can send an alert to your smartphone when there is a disturbance – giving you the option of remotely turning on lights or calling the police.
