Three Reasons Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Working
- AC Maintenance, Air Conditioner Tips, Fahrhall, Home Comfort, HVAC Tips
If your air conditioner isn’t working, don’t panic. Before calling for AC repair, try these three fixes to see if you can get the cold air flowing.
1. Air Filter is Clogged
For some reason, homeowners seem to forget that they need to change their furnace filter in the summer. If you have central air conditioning, you’re actually using part of your furnace and therefore need to check filters monthly and replace as needed. Using the AC with a clogged furnace can cause a number of problems, from dust and allergens floating in the air to a complete shut-down.
2. Condenser is Obstructed
The outdoor unit needs to be free and clear of debris to work properly. Windy storms can carry leaves, twigs, branches and even lost toys which can crowd the unit and cause performance issues. Make sure when you’re doing any type of yard work, you take a minute to look at the condenser and clear anything that has accumulated next to the unit.
3. Thermostat is Incorrect/Out of Batteries
If your air conditioner isn’t working, sometimes fixing it is as simple as checking the settings or replacing the batteries. Please remember to always follow manufacturer instructions when changing settings or batteries.
If you’ve tried the above fixes and the air conditioner still isn’t working, it’s probably time to call a professional. If there’s a problem with refrigerant levels or the evaporator coil, you’ll need the expertise of a certified technician.
