When something goes wrong with your heating system, don’t panic! Sometimes there’s an incredibly easy fix and you can have the heat flowing again in just a few minutes. Here are some things to try to troubleshoot common furnace problems!
Replace Furnace Filter
Many times, furnace issues are the result of running the system with a clogged filter. Ideally, you should be checking the filter monthly and replacing it before it becomes clogged. One way to know if it’s clogged is to hold the filter to a light source and see if light passes through it. If light cannot pass through, it should be replaced.
Ensure Thermostat Settings are Correct
Sometimes the thermostat is inadvertently turned off (it happens more often than you think!). Always double check that the thermostat is turned on and switched to HEAT. It’s also worth mentioning that thermostats need working batteries to operate.
Check for Obstructions
To work properly, the furnace needs to have sufficient airflow in and out of your home. Inside the house, make sure vents and registers are not blocked by furniture, curtains or rugs. Outside, you’ll want to check that the furnace intake and exhaust pipes are clear of snow and/or ice accumulation.
If the above tips don’t fix your furnace problems, it’s likely that you need to call a professional heating technician to diagnose the issue and undertake a heating system repair.
