Coming home after a long, hot day in the summer to a warm home is the last thing any of us want. Upon investigation, you notice that it’s your air conditioner blowing hot air throughout your home. But why, and how can it be fixed?
- Check Your Thermostat
If your thermostat is on the wrong setting, it’s a quick and easy fix! You should check that your thermostat is set to “AUTO” instead of “ON” so that it’s only working when your home needs cooling. Having it set to “ON” means that air will always be forced through, even when your air conditioner isn’t actually cooling, so you feel warm air coming through.
- Check Your Air Conditioner’s Breakers
Your air conditioner has two breakers, for the inside and outside units. If the outside unit has been tripped, cold air will not be produced but you’ll still feel air blowing through your home. This is because the inside unit’s breaker hasn’t been tripped off and is still circulating air around your home as it should, but it’s warm instead of cool.
*It’s very important that you take precaution with tripped breakers! They exist to trip your air conditioner off when there is an electrical current overload, so it’s best to seek professional assistance if you notice your breakers tripping.
- Clean or Change Your Air Conditioner’s Air Filters
The filters clean dust, dirt and other pollutants from the air before it’s blown through into your home, but these filters can get clogged and restrict your unit’s airflow. Not only that, dirty filters can restrict airflow so much that the unit ends up freezing itself potentially causing serious damage! Make sure to clear or switch out air filters regularly to avoid this.
- When Did You Last Clean Your Unit or Have Air Conditioner Maintenance?
We recently talked about proper summer air conditioner maintenance and how keeping it clean and unobstructed is necessary. Dirt, grime and any other obstructions can block airflow (and block your unit from releasing hot air to be able to collect more from your home), forcing it to break down and work inefficiently.
- Finally, It Could be a Case of Low Refrigerant
Your air conditioner’s refrigerant shouldn’t be able to run low, as its line is supposed to be permanently sealed. But leaks happen, and low refrigerant can be very risky for your unit! Your air conditioner blowing hot air could be the result of this situation, and a professional will be able to tell you if your line is leaking and fix it.
