Time for Winter AC Maintenance!
- air conditioner, Fahrhall, Tips, winter
Air conditioning season is officially over. Soon the leaves are going to change and the temperature is going to drop and, before you know it, we’ll be in the snowy, frigid season of winter. The harsh winter weather can damage your outdoor AC unit, so ensure that your compressor is properly secured with our winter AC maintenance tips.
☑ Turn off the Breaker
The first thing you should do as part of your winter AC maintenance is to turn off the breaker to your outdoor unit. It’s important to flip the circuit to prevent the condenser from turning on in the case of an unusually warm day in the winter.
☑ Rake Leaves and Clear Debris
During the fall and winter, debris can make its way into your condenser, causing damage. As part of your AC winter maintenance, remove branches and rake leaves around the unit. You can also use a hose to gently clean the outside of the unit—just make sure to allow the condenser to completely dry.
☑ Inspect the Unit for Damage
The best time to inspect the condenser for damage is after thoroughly cleaning it. Perform a visual inspection to see if there are any cracks or rust. Small damage to your unit could lead to expensive repair bills if neglected. If you do see anything concerning, contact a professional cooling specialist for diagnostics and repair.
☑ Use an AC Condenser Cover
Once your condenser is clean and dry, cover it with an AC cover. Make sure that the cover you choose is specially made for air conditioners as they need to be waterproof, able to cover the whole unit and allow sufficient airflow to prevent water pooling.
Don’t forget to check the condenser periodically to ensure that the cover is still in place. You’ll also likely need to rake the leaves around the unit a few times and clear debris after a storm.
